Benefits of Attending a Support Group

Our peer-led support groups provide a sense of belonging and shared understanding that is difficult to find elsewhere.

Safety

Participants tell us they feel safe in the group. They're free to express themselves with others who are also grieving as a result of suicide.

Coping

We support each other to cope with the pain, hurt, and loss of a loved one. Everyone who has taken part has said they would recommend groups to others.

Respect

Participants sense the respect as they share their grief. Even when sharing things they may never have said out loud before, the atmosphere is non-judgmental and supportive.

Understanding

People grieving a suicide loss experience loneliness, rejection, guilt, and shame. The group provides an environment of understanding, even when supportive family and friends cannot.

We know it takes courage to come to a group.

You won't have to talk if you don't want to — many people don't, particularly the first time. You don't have to come again, and you don't even have to stay for the whole session if you decide it's not for you. But most people return after their first meeting and, over time, find the confidence to speak about themselves — and eventually to offer support to others. If you come and decide it's not the right moment, you are always welcome to return when you feel ready.
